About the Author

James F. Lane, Ed.D. serves as Managing Director of K–16 Solutions at ETS, leading efforts to strengthen connections between high school, postsecondary education, and the workforce. In this role, he oversees initiatives that align assessment, learning, and credentialing systems to improve student transitions, accelerate teacher preparation, and ensure that every learner gains the skills needed for success in college and careers.

Prior to ETS, Dr. Lane was CEO of PDK International and Educators Rising. He also served as Acting Assistant Secretary for the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education and as Senior Advisor to the U.S. Secretary of Education at the U.S. Department of Education, following his term as Superintendent of Public Instruction in Virginia. Dr. Lane was recognized as the 2017 Virginia Superintendent of the Year and is the author of the Amazon #1 Bestselling book Leading with Laser Focus: The 7 Steps to School Success. Earlier in his career, he served as a local superintendent, assistant superintendent, principal, and band director. He remains passionate about developing great educators and creating systems that inspire every student to achieve their full potential.
